common in certain wines associated with "pepper" spices. He will also talk about the usual sensory components of these wines (i.e. sweet/tart/bitter/salt/umami/body/oak, etc.) and how they interact with common sensory qualities of BBQ style foods

Instructor: Cathy Curlee-Lynch, Wine & Roses Head Gardener

Join us for a walking tour of the beautiful wedding garden, sensory garden, and the grounds of Wine & Roses. In this class, participants will also learn important gardening fundamentals such as; how to re-use and recycle their own containers at home, how to drill holes in planters, the art of layering the soil, using rocks to ensure proper drainage, etc. Cathy will lead participants in a hands on tutorial on how to begin, keep, and maintain at home kitchen herb gardens. She will demonstrate practical uses for herbs and edible flowers, including chives, basil, oregano, parsley, tarragon, rosemary, mint, edible flowers and the importance of knowing when they are okay to eat.

Wine & Roses will provide aprons, gardening gloves, and a variety of herbs. Participants need to wear comfortable closed toe shoes for the tour.

Michael McCay and his family have farmed in Lodi for 20 plus years. Michael came to Lodi in the mid 1980s, started making wine in 1994 and launched the McCay Cellars label in 2007. From the beginning, Michael’s winemaking style has involved native fermentation...discovering and exploring the layers and trueness of this "old world style" winemaking. Concentrating on Zinfandel and Rhone varietals has become a passion at McCay Cellars.

About the musicians...

JOHN MCDONALD

While still in high school, John started playing with local professional jazz and big bands.  In ’69 he signed with Elektra Records, playing with LA pop bands who toured with The Doors, Three Dog Night, Steve Miller Band, Taj Mahal and many others through the ’70’s. Currently he plays throughout the Central Valley and San Francisco Bay Area.

Shelley Denny 

Shelley is a freelance musician who has toured with Stan Kenton, Petula Clark, Les and Larry Elgart. He has done countless shows for Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Nancy Wilson, and The Supremes. He taught music at California State University, Sacramento, and trombone at Conservatory of Music, UOP, Stockton

Benny Watson

As a solo pianist or a band leader, Benny has played at all the major performing venues in the Greater Bay Area. He is not only a wonderful keyboardist, he also sings, composes, produces and arranges music. And because of his depth of talent, he is very much in demand. We are  very happy to have him as a guest for this event with the Shanna Carlson Trio.

Shanna Carlson

Shanna has been playing at Wine and Roses for over 12 years now, mostly as a solo performer, but the last 3+ years she's had her own trio for  the Tuesday Jazz Nights.  She has been singing and playing around the Bay Area for many years  but also in  the Northwest,  in Sweden, Switzerland and Norway.  Her own quintet performed at Stanford Jazz Festival, San Jose Jazz Festival, and other concert venues around the Bay Area. Shanna’s voice has been compared to Rosemary Clooney, and at times June Christy. She is a story-teller, delivering a lyric which touches the heart- not only as a balladeer, but swinging, with a playful side. She has two albums under her name and two albums collaborating with other singers.
