Shanna Carlson has been singing and playing in and around the Bay Area since she was twelve, starting with playing for her church and later moving on through weddings, private parties, big bands, small combos, concerts, jazz festivals, recordings, musicals and radio and TV appearances. “She has an appealing and clear voice, a strong sense of swing and at times sounds like a mix of Rosemary Clooney and Ernestine Anderson, straddling the boundary between jazz and middle-of-the-road cabaret music.”
[Not pictured] Gil Lester, the featured bass player at the Towne House Lounge at Wine & Roses, has practiced his art in countless venues for more than fifty years. Gil’s early interest in jazz was sparked when hearing the Nat King Cole Trio with his parents in 1950—long before Cole’s musical talent was universally recognized. Gil was 8 years old at the time but knew then that jazz was his passion. As a high school student, Gil was working in jazz groups throughout the region—albeit illegally given his age. His talent was the draw for musicians far older than their younger counterpart. By the time he was a senior in high school, the Sacramento Symphony recruited him to their ranks. Gil majored in music at Chico State University but decided to pursue a profession in financial services. Having said that, his life-long passion has been music—jazz specifically. His group, the Gil Lester Trio, has produced several CDs that have been recognized locally and regionally. We are pleased to include his exceptional talent among our team at Wine & Roses.
[Not pictured, Jason Myers] Drawing primarily from a wide repertoire of standards from the 1930’s and 1940’s, Jason Myers has the ability of capturing the spirit of that time while simultaneously adding his own distinct voice. His style has been influenced by “Fats” Waller, Nat “King” Cole, and Dave McKenna. In addition to his extensive repertoire from the American Songbook he includes original songs that range from sentimental ballads to modern novelties. Jason was the resident pianist at Hillstone (formerly Houston’s Restaurant) in San Francisco for thirteen years starting in February 1998. He performed solo piano until forming a trio in 2001. The Jason Myers Trio held steady five nights a week for over nine years until December 2010. Besides his own projects, Jason has also performed at the Monterey Jazz Festival with Clint Baker’s New Orleans Jazz Band, The Brian Kane Trio, Mal Sharpe’s Big Money In Dixieland, and been an accompanist for vocalists, Maye Cavallaro, Shanna Carlson, Carolyne Swayze, Jennifer Lee, Jackie Ryan, and Mary Stallings.
Kim Nejak has performed professionally for over thirty years in a variety of venues and locations. Her musical interpretations of standards, contemporary, light rock, and more, are drawn from a wide range of artists. Her warmth, engaging style and her beautiful piano and vocal interpretations offer a special quality to the Towne House experience for our guests.
